Good to hear! Without the periodicity conditions the outer materials are not well-defined and prevent reconstruction of valid normal vectors that are required to set up the in- / outlet boundaries. They can be bulk (i.e. == 1) or wall materials (!= 0, 1) but not inactive (== 0).
